Five Food Trends From 2021 That Will Continue in 2022

Dec 21, 2021

Santa isn’t the only person who appreciates a good list, we do too! Especially when it’s related to cooking and food trends. We recently came across the article “Top 21 Food Trends of 2021” and thought that now would be a good time to highlight a few of our favorite trends from the list that we see continuing into 2022, as well as add a few of our own.

Comfort Food

After a challenging couple of years, many people have embraced the old comforts of the kitchen in a bid to retain some normality in their lives. Our kitchens have seen the return of many classic comforts like Oatmeal, Slow-Cooked pot roasts, Casseroles and other heart-warming emotional dishes that make us want to cuddle up and be cozy. If reading this made you crave any of those dishes, we have recipes for all of them here.

Meals for Mental Health

It is well-known that the foods we eat play a big role in not only our gut health, but also our mental health. That’s why it’s beneficial for us to include a variety of meals in our daily eating habits with as many different ingredients and nutrients as possible to benefit our bodies and mind.

Eating for your body and mind will be a continued trend in 2022 as people continue to become more aware of the importance of food in improving their mental health. There are many ingredients and ‘superfoods’ out there that claim to boost your mood like turmeric, a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant which is said to help improve symptoms of depression.

Plant-Based Pantries

Plant-based eating is becoming less of a trend and of a way of life at this stage as it continues to gain momentum across the world. We are seeing more and more people embrace this style of eating, whether it's to change up a weekly dinner meal or incorporate more plant-based foods into their daily diets for health reasons.

2022 will see more creative plant-based cooking and products come out to play and we predict that spices will be a strong ingredient in this food movement because of their versatility in making each dish taste unique and flavorful. When we started our company, we made sure that our spice blends were not only made from fresh and organic ingredients but also that they were all completely vegan so as to be as inclusive and accessible to as many consumers as possible. Spice blends are great for helping to upgrade any plant-based meal you can think of, whether it's vegan, vegetarian, or flexitarian so pop one in your pantry to try with your next plant-based meal.

Low-Waste Dishes

Each year, an incredible one third of food produced in the world is wasted and is also responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Throwing away perfectly edible food not only contributes to more waste, but is also a waste of money and increases our carbon footprint. The most devastating part is that it is something that is within our power to change.

At SugarRoti, we are committed to driving everyone towards zero to low waste. We package our spices in sustainable packaging that is pre-measured and single-serve so you don’t have to buy upwards of 10 different spice bottles. Bottles can be expensive to buy and wasteful as they’re often only used once, forgotten about in your spice cabinet for a few weeks or months, and then thrown away.

If all of us can make small efforts at home and we, as brands, can make larger changes in how we produce and package our food, we can all fight food waste together.

Fusion Cuisine

With so many truly tasty traditional foods from around the world available on our doorsteps these days, we are excited to see more from the Fusion Food trend in 2022! Especially, because we have such a strong focus on the fusion possibilities between American and Indian cuisines through our spices.

We expect to see a lot more exciting innovations coming out of this space over the next few years and hope to be able to contribute to that from our side as well. Some fusion creations we have already created include our SugarRoti Pasta Puttanesca, Shakshuka, and even our Tofu with Soba Noodles.
